Diesel Forklift Vs Electric Forklift

One thing that electric and diesel forklifts have in common is that they reliably do their job. If you’re interested in electric or diesel forklift rentals or sales and would like an on-site demonstration, come and talk to us at Ring Power Lift Trucks.

If you need a forklift, one of the big decisions you have to make is whether to get an electric or diesel forklift. Let’s take a look at each kind.

Electric Forklifts

Electric forklifts are zippy and quiet. They don’t release emissions that foul the air, contribute to global warming, or make people sick. They’re relatively cheap to charge up. When you have an electric forklift you don’t have to worry about the sometimes wild volatility of fuel prices, which can seriously affect your operating budget. They’re also cheaper to maintain than LP gas or diesel models, having fewer fluids and moving parts. Their lighter weight and the concentrated mass of the battery means electric forklifts are easier to manoeuvre than LP gas- and diesel-powered forklifts.

But there are some downsides too. Electric forklifts tend to be more expensive to purchase than other kinds. They can’t be used while the battery is being charged, which can take several hours. This inconvenience can be avoided by buying an extra battery to swap out, but that takes time and labor too, and batteries can be pricey. Using attachments can drain the battery quickly. And some electric forklifts aren’t very weather-resistant, as rain may cause electrical problems. They’re largely used for indoor environments.

Diesel Forklifts

Diesel forklifts are powerful and tough. They can be used in the rain, which makes them good for transporting materials from one site location to another. They’re generally cheaper than electric models, and better for towing. It’s a lot quicker to refuel a diesel forklift than recharge an electric. Because of their strength, they can handle hydraulic attachments better than electric forklifts.

The drawbacks of a diesel forklift are also worth considering. Since they produce a lot of toxic fumes, including carbon monoxide, soot and sulfur, they are not suitable for most indoor settings, and require special training to avoid exposing workers to unsafe air. Their emissions contribute to global warming and respiratory illnesses. Diesel forklifts also generate quite a lot of noise, which can annoy workers and make it hard for them to communicate or hear important sounds. The price of diesel fuel is also substantial and volatile.
