Forklift operator FAQs: How to get forklift certified

To earn your forklift certification, you need two types of training, followed by an evaluation. The two parts of training are formal instruction and practical training.

What Exactly Does A Forklift Operator Do?

Forklift operators move heavy materials around a facility using a powered industrial lift truck. This job includes tasks such as

  • Moving, stacking, and organizing heavy materials safely
  • Loading and unloading trucks, trains, or other vehicles
  • Performing routine checks and light maintenance on their equipment
  • Reporting any equipment malfunctions
  • Obeying all OSHA health and safety standards for safe operation

Operator Certification

To become a certified forklift operator, you have to meet certain basic requirements:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You need to be physically able to lift, sit, stand, move, squat, walk, or climb without assistance
  • Previous warehouse experience is not required, but it’s a plus.
  • You must be able to clearly communicate, and a certain amount of mechanical aptitude is very helpful
  • You must complete OSAH-prescribed training.

What Kind of Training Is Needed?

To earn your forklift certification, you need two types of training, followed by an evaluation. The two parts of training are formal instruction and practical training.

Formal instruction can be done in a classroom setting or by studying training videos on a series of topics. The practical training portion included demonstrations followed by practical exercises. These exercises will include operating the forklift under the direct supervision of a qualified trainer.

After completing the training, your knowledge retention and safe operation of the forklift will be evaluated.  If you pass the evaluation, your employer can certify your competence.

When Do Operators Need Refresher Training?

OSHA requires refresher training when the operator:

  • Has been observed operating the lift in an unsafe manner
  • Has been involved in an accident or near miss
  • Has received an unsatisfactory evaluation
  • Is assigned to a different type of truck

Besides the reasons listed above, OSHA requires an operator’s performance to be evaluated at least once every three years.
