When is Forklift Refresher Training Required?

OSHA certification requires the operators to successfully complete both written and hands-on training, and refresher training once every three years. Providing this training is absolutely mandatory, and failure to do so can make your company subject to heavy fines.

Forklift Operator Training

Anyone who operates a forklift must be provided with certification training. This training consists of written instructions and hands on training. While some businesses may have a certified trainer on staff to provide this training, many forklift dealers around the country offer training for their customers’ employees, as well as refresher training as required.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations for Refresher Training

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires periodic refresher training for forklift operators. OSHA regulation 1910.178 (l) (4) (iii) states that “An evaluation for each Powered Truck operator’s performance shall be conducted at least once every 3 years”. As of 2023, failure to provide this training can result in hefty fines ranging from a minimum of $1036 up to a maximum of $15,625.

Additional Refresher Training Requirements

In addition to mandatory refresher training every three years, there are instances where operators will need refresher training before the three year period. OSHA requires refresher training for forklift operators in any of the following circumstances:

  • An operator has been observed to operate the vehicle in an unsafe manner. This could include excessive speed, horseplay, racing, letting someone ride on the forks, or any other risky behavior.
  • The operator has been involved in an accident or a near miss incident. When an accident occurs, your company should have a plan in place to investigate and report the incident, and all parties responsible must receive retraining to help prevent a recurrence.
  • The operator has been assigned to operate a different type of forklift that they’re not familiar with. Since not all forklifts use the same operational controls, the operator will need training in the safe operation of the new equipment.
  • A condition in the workplace changes in a manner that could affect the safe operation of the vehicle.

Final Words

Forklift operators are trained to become highly skilled in their safe use and operation. OSHA certification requires the operators to successfully complete both written and hands-on training, and refresher training once every three years. Providing this training is absolutely mandatory, and failure to do so can make your company subject to heavy fines.
